WILL THE REAL DAD PLEASE STAND UP

This is a frequent topic within my circle, sort of.  Occasionally the conversation about step children comes up and I have a soft spot with this topic because one of my children happens to be the step child.  He still doesn't get it though.  He knows he has a different last name.  He knows he has two dads.  He knows that he looks different, but he still doesn't get it.  And I like that.  I like that he just knows that I'm mommy and my husband is daddy and he is the oldest of three.  He is safe.

The kids were talking in the car tonight.  My daughter says, "Most of mommy's kids look like her.  That would be me and andy."  My son says, "Yeah and I look like daddy.  How come I'm the only one that looks like daddy?"  See, he still doesn't get it, and I'm fine with that.  He thinks I just decided to give him a different last name.

See my husband became a part of our lives when my son was only about three or four months, so he is the one who has been raising him.  He is his father.  My mother in law was once talking to him and said something to the effect of, "I know you don't get to see your dad very often." My son replied, "what are you talking about? I see my daddy everyday!" I love it!

I'm sure they have some type of bond biologically, but I don't see it.  Perhaps because I'm never around the two of them.  However, I know my son looks up to my husband.  He has been dad for as long as my son can remember.  I think my family is perfect and I wouldn't have it any other way.

So who's the dad around this camp.  The one who's there everyday.  The one who spends quality time.  It's not necessarily the one who is the creator.
