I've been really upset with how the media advertises to African Americans. I saw THIS today courtesy of MISS JIA and it sparked a nerve with me. See I've had a problem with how we are portrayed, what we value, and how we are represented in general when it comes to the media.
I do believe that some of us put too much value on material items. I know that some of us will spend our last to make sure our hair looks good, or buy/rent those rims and tires to floss when one can't afford to buy groceries, pay rent, or keep a job. Just because there are those few who live that life style doesn't mean that's how all of us are. For example there is this commercial that plays on the radio station KJLH where some guy is romancing his girlfriend, giving massages and being all lovey dovey when someone starts knocking on the door. Who is it? It's the apartment manager demanding the rent at 2am! Ok? Then the guy is like, "Oh snap I ain't got 2 nickels to rub together!" Are you guys side eyeing like me right now? Then the girlfriend says, "Just call Pico Union Pawn shop."
First of all, who in the hell is going to come up with enough crap in their house to get enough money from a pawn shop to pay rent? Ok this isn't even my point. The point is instead of advertising programs that teach people how to manage their money properly, they are essentially saying get a loan and pay us back more than we lent you, which is going to put you in a worse situation than you were already in! I can't stand this! All I hear are commercials for loans. Yeah get money that you can't afford to spend and forever be in debt!
Another set of commercials that got under my spine were for a birth control product called Mirena. I wrote about it before, check it out HERE. Why did the black family have to feel so overwhelmed with the kids with a dad that barely helps out? Why can't we just be happy? The sad part is that research is done on the demographics for the radio audience and what areas commercials are played before they put them out. I feel like we are so much greater than the media portrays us. I wasn't taught to work for other people the rest of my life, I wasn't taught to spend money carelessly, but I wasn't shown how to do those things properly. We aren't shown how to make our own money, and some people don't have the drive to figure it out on their own. Some people don't believe they can be in a better situation that they are in because they don't see that. My people need more positive resources, not an auto title loan!
I hope someone has the balls to turn our image around and offer more things that will help my people get and stay out of debt so they can pass down generations of wealth instead of debt.
