In the past I've held a bit of anger towards police officers. We often wonder why they shoot to kill as opposed to disarming. I have had my share of run ins with them, one extremely traumatic than the others. However, when I took a trip with my daughter to go on a tour of the police station, my opinions somehow changed.
When we first began the tour, my daughter and I were the only African Americans in the group, being that she is in a predominantly white girl scout troop. The officer would show us something and then allow the girls to ask questions. We happened to see an African American man being booked when the tour began and he addressed it. When my daughter raised her hand to ask a question, he pointed to her and said "and we don't want YOU to get arrested."
My insides immediately started burning! Why did he have to point to my child and make that comment? I know, I was being totally sensitive, but look who I'm surrounded by. Anyway we continued the tour and he gave us a lot of information and he looked at me when answering the majority of them. Hmmmm, maybe I was his focus point to keep him from being nervous now that I think about it.
Anyway, I learned a lot, including the fact that if you're in a car accident with a child and you were talking on your cell phone (not hands free) it's considered child endangerment and you can go to jail! I understand that they are here to serve and protect us. Even though I had that horrible experience, I understand why it happened, although no justice was ever served. I do have one last question:
Why aren't they ever around when people want to turn left when there is no left turn between 7-9 a.m.?
